Final Results, and other numbers....

Here is a post-mortem for the October Activity Challenge:
Purpose: To engage staff in increasing physical activity throughout the month of October, 2016. National studies indicate that only “about 1 in 5 (21%) adults meet the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines”. According to the CDC, “adults need at least 2.5 hours a week of physical activity” to remain healthy (source).
Scope: Staff were invited to create teams of three (some created teams of four; these did not factor significantly into the winners of the challenge), and log their daily activity in terms of minutes rather than steps, miles, or any other measurement. This idea was borne out of requests following last year’s challenge for an alternate to tracking steps or miles since there is no way to do that with swimmers, horse riders, etc. Team captains were provided with excel spreadsheets to track time, and were asked to send results weekly to me via email. Results were collected and posted to a larger excel document that allowed for real-time ranking of teams and individuals throughout the challenge. One of the spreadsheets collected data by day of week, allowing analysis of which days saw more activity during the week, and which week was busiest during the month.
Results: Eighty seven individuals registered in twenty eight teams of three and four.
The top three teams and their total hours are as follows:
                1. The Beat Goes On 8515 minutes
                2. The Three T’s 7404 minutes
                3. Fancy Feet 7241 minutes

The top three individuals and their total hours are as follows:
                1. Sandy Lamphere 4620 minutes
                2. Peg Sullivan 4205 minutes
                3. Dee Thomas 3657 minutes

Day of the week with most activity was Saturday. The day with the least activity was Thursday.

The second week has the most overall activity (31,445 minutes), with the fourth week saw the least, with 23,577 minutes.
Total minutes of activity reported from 1 OCT–31OCT: 121,661 which equates to 2028 hours.
Total number of individuals participating in challenge: 81 (Eighty seven signed up, six did not report any minutes).
Total number of teams participating in challenge: 26 (Twenty eight teams signed up, two teams did not report any minutes).
Average number of minutes of activity per active participant: 121,661 / 81 = 1502
Average number of minutes of activity per active participant per week: 1502 / 4.42 = 340 
The final week of the month had three days which are accounted for by the “.42” in the above
       calculation.
With the weekly goal per person being established at 150 minutes, our active participants have exceeded double the recommended level during the challenge.

Thank you to everyone who participated. I know that it wasn't ideal for everyone, but overall I believe that most people had some fun, got some exercise, and were able to see where they're at in regards to activity levels. I look forward to the next one, and am open to suggestions! Please drop me an email at eugene.soboleski@va.gov!!

IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWWWWWNNNNNNNN

You're welcome. I hope the earworm sticks with you for the whole weekend. Why? Because the October 2016 Activity Challenge ENDS when Monday ends! Despite the crappy forecast, find ways to be deliberately active this weekend! No, shopping in Khol's doesn't count (you know who I'm talking about......). Here, then, are the standings for TEAMS as of 1:30 FRIDAY AFTERNOON. Second and Third place are basically WIDE OPEN for contention. Would be fun to see a 'silent' team swoop in and take it!

And for some added incentive...

WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE???

I woke up this morning to discover that we're in the last full week of October!!! Whaaaaat?
This challenge has been quite interesting, from my perspective. We've had several teams trading places up and down the board, and a few who seem to have solidly locked themselves in.
But LET's NOT let them stay there!!!
In these final 7 days of the challenge, let's get out there and be active!
I'm still missing information from a few teams for weeks one and two. That said, here are some numbers:
Week 1 Total Minutes = 26875 = 447.92 hours.
Week 2 Total Minutes = 27006 = 450.10 hours.

WOW.
As far as days of the week go, Saturday has been the most active, while Fridays show the least amount of activity.
Here are the standings as of NOON on 10/24. If you haven't sent me your numbers, please do so! We'll be wrapping up late during the first week of November.
Thanks again,
Gene

Nearly done with Week TWO!!

Numbers are rolling in every day. I try to reply to each Captain, and I'm getting some good feedback. Here's what I just received...

" We are actually doing pretty well-this week should even be better than last week.  I saw your e-mail late as to letting you know the hours on Monday-I gave them to you on Friday.  I feel really good exercising more than I normally do.  [One of our members] even gave us a challenge within the group to lift weights one hour a week, so that’s lots of fun.  I hope everyone else is having as much fun as we are."

For me, this is what the challenge is all about!!

I'm still missing numbers from SEVEN teams for week one, but as of RIGHT NOW, this is where we all stand for WEEK ONE.
Keep up the great work!!!!

First Three Days

I AM IMPRESSED!!!!
In the middle of last week, we only had about 5 teams signed up. As of 3pm on the 4th, we have a total of TWENTY SIX TEAMS!!! Check the last blog post for a list. I'll still accept teams this week (I'd hate to turn anyone away who wants to get active, ya know???)

Some clarification: we're tracking TIME this time around, not steps or miles. Captains, if you can put minutes (just the number) in the spreadsheet, it will make filling them all in a bit easier for me.

In some places, it says that mowing the lawn doesn't count. I was challenged on that, and was convinced that using a push mower SHOULD count, and so now it DOES COUNT. HOORAY! (shopping still doesn't.....).

If you have comments or questions, even polite challenges from one team to another, please feel free to use the comment section below.
**Please keep in mind that at no time during this event will I be trying to sell you anything, make offers, etc. SO....if you see those types of comments (almost always SPAM), please ignore them. I'll do my best to come in and clear them out, but please don't fall for anything that shows up down there. This blogging platform is free, so.....not as secure as the pay-as-you-go platforms. Thank you.**

Alright!! Get moving! The weeks run from SATURDAY TO FRIDAY, so please be sure to get your numbers in to your Captains on Monday for the previous week so that they can get them to me!!!

Cheers!
Gene

Some clarification: Initially, I said that mowing the lawn didn't count. I was asked to reconsider, and I have. MOWING THE LAWN IS IN! Raking leaves, too, for that matter (though using a leaf blower...probably not). Remember to give your times to your team captain so that they can pass them along to me. I'd LIKE to have hours for each day, not just a total for the week. I'll be sending the captains an email with a tracker...

Alright, everyone. THANK YOU for your participation. Look forward to more posts as we go along. Have a great weekend!! Gene
