Some clarification: Initially, I said that mowing the lawn didn't count. I was asked to reconsider, and I have. MOWING THE LAWN IS IN! Raking leaves, too, for that matter (though using a leaf blower...probably not). Remember to give your times to your team captain so that they can pass them along to me. I'd LIKE to have hours for each day, not just a total for the week. I'll be sending the captains an email with a tracker...

Alright, everyone. THANK YOU for your participation. Look forward to more posts as we go along. Have a great weekend!! Gene

Overview, Rules, and Housekeeping

WELCOME TO THE OCTOBER 2016
ACTIVITY CHALLENGE!!

We had such great participation in last year's challenge and I believe that this year will be even better. In getting ready for this year's challenge, I gave some thought to how we could include people who aren't big fans of walking or running. My original plan was to have the activities logged at a site called President's Challenge, which was a gov't site that was fanTASTIC in terms of being able to give points for different activities and levels of activity. You could get points for gardening, boxing, cycling, walking the dog, etc. The site was great.

Then it lost federal funding and was shut down on 31 AUG. WHAT?? Are you kidding me right now? No, I'm not. The site has been shut down, and the replacement site does not offer the same versatility as the old one did. So we're not using it.

This year's October Activity Challenge will track TIME spent doing activities/exercise, not steps taken or miles run. What counts and what doesn't? I'm glad you asked.

WHAT DOESN'T COUNT
  • Gardening does not count
  • Mowing the lawn does not count
  • Shopping does not count
  • Meditation does not count
WHAT COUNTS
  • Walking/Running/Biking count
  • Hiking counts
  • Kayaking/canoeing counts
  • Participating in a sport counts (darts?)
  • Basically activity/exercise that is intentionally exercise/activity counts
Clear as mud? Here's how the logistics will work:

  1. PARTICIPANTS WILL FORM TEAMS OF THREE (3)
  2. TEAM CAPTAIN WILL EMAIL GENE AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK WITH HOURS LOGGED FOR EACH MEMBER OF THE TEAM
  3. GENE WILL POST THE RESULTS TO A SHAREPOINT PAGE AS WELL AS TO THIS BLOG
  4. WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED DURING THE SECOND WEEK OF NOVEMBER
  5. PRIZES (OF SOME SORT. WHO KNOWS AT THIS POINT?) WILL BE HANDED OUT TO 1ST, 2ND, AND 3RD PLACE TEAMS AS WELL AS TOP THREE INDIVIDUALS.
Are you ready for this year's challenge???

Get your teams together and send them to Eugene.soboleski@va.gov!!!!
